Duck Duck Goose

Monday, 11 December 2017

You wouldn’t want to be a duck or goose in this corner of France.

We’re in the Dordogne region. Very popular holiday destination especially for Brits, 2 hours inland from Bordeaux on the west coast, and 5 hours from our beloved Provence.

The Dordogne has an amazing landscape and a staggering 1,001 chateaus dotted throughout it. The mighty Dordogne River from which the region found its wealth many many years ago, controlling the trade up and down the river, mainly of the walnut, yes, the walnut, it now serves as a major tourist attraction for typical Euros and their typical outdoor adventures.

Notoriety is also gained from the prevalence of truffles in the area, fetching over 500€ / kg it is making some farmers very wealthy. But the true culinary stars of this region are the duck and the goose. We have not seen a single set menu that doesn’t have Foie Gras as the entree, and Duck something as the main. Every single restaurant offers it. And if that doesn’t give you your yearly quota of game, every third shop sells it for you to take home.

Now, we don’t condone the practice of making foie gras, but we did succumb to the French pressure, and it was fairly delicious! Then feeling guilty as we do love the (living) duck, the following day we ordered the only vegetarian menu in all of France! Sacrilege! I spat at myself when ordering it.

We have enjoyed the week here, cold, Christmassy and full of Chateaus. We are thankful that we don’t sport feathers or we would not be making it out alive.

Next stop was to be Colmar, France, but we've decided to jet to Copenhagen for a few days first because, why not!

Stay tuned.

Scott.
